Disinfecting floors and walls in healthcare facilities

Floors are the largest surface in a healthcare facility. They are considered non-critical, but they accumulate soil, body fluids and microorganisms brought in by the movement of patients and staff. A simple protocol, using a concentrated detergent-disinfectant, allows cleaning and disinfection in a single pass, with controlled product consumption.

In short

  • Romanian MoH Order 1761/2021 recommends wiping for routine and terminal disinfection of surfaces.
  • Biosept Floor and Bionet A15 are diluted between 0.25% and 5%, depending on the intended effect; the application rate is 40 mL of working solution per m².
  • Use a dedicated mop for each risk area and work from the clean area towards the dirty area.

Choose the concentration according to the intended effect

For Biosept Floor and Bionet A15 (MoH authorisation no. 4449BIO/02/12.30, PT2), the authorisation sets different concentrations and contact times for each effect:

EffectSettingConcentrationContact time
Bactericidal (EN 13727)Healthcare facilities1% (100 mL / 10 L)5 minutes
Yeasticidal (EN 13624)Healthcare facilities1% (100 mL / 10 L)5 minutes
Virucidal (EN 14476), extended to enveloped virusesHealthcare facilities2% (200 mL / 10 L)60 minutes
Fungicidal (EN 13624)Surfaces not in contact with patients2% (200 mL / 10 L)60 minutes
Bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidalPublic and private premises other than healthcare0.25% (25 mL / 10 L)60 minutes
MycobactericidalPublic and private premises other than healthcare2% (200 mL / 10 L)90 minutes
The actual effect depends on the time observed. A floor wiped with a 1% solution and dry after 5 minutes has benefited from the bactericidal and yeasticidal effect, not from the virucidal effect, which requires 2% and 60 minutes.

How much product you need

The application rate in the authorisation is 40 mL of working solution per m². For a 250 m² corridor:

CalculationResult
Working solution: 250 m² × 40 mL/m²10 L
Product at 1%: 10 L × 10 mL/L100 mL
Product at 2%: 10 L × 20 mL/L200 mL

The method, step by step

  1. Remove solid debris and coarse soil.
  2. Prepare the working solution in a clean, labelled container, with water and the amount of product matching the chosen concentration.
  3. Work by risk area, with mops and cloths dedicated to each area (colour coding), from the clean area towards the dirty area and from the far end towards the exit.
  4. Apply the solution evenly by wiping and leave it to act for the full contact time.
  5. Change the solution when it becomes soiled and when moving to a different risk area.
  6. Record the operation, product and concentration in the room schedule.

Common mistakes

  • Overdosing “to be safe”: it increases consumption and residues without shortening the contact time.
  • The same bucket for the washroom and the ward.
  • Force-drying the floor before the contact time has elapsed.
  • Confusing Biosept Floor (applied by wiping) with a spray product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Biosept Floor suitable for walls?

Yes. The authorisation covers disinfection and washing of surfaces, including walls and floors, in healthcare facilities and in industrial, domestic and institutional premises.

Do I need to rinse after application?

Follow the label instructions and the facility’s procedure. For surfaces in contact with food, specific food-area rules apply.

What is the difference between Biosept Floor and Bionet A15?

Both products share the same authorisation basis (4449BIO/02/12.30). Biosept Floor is formulated as a degreasing detergent-disinfectant, applied by wiping; Bionet A15 can be applied by wiping or spraying.
